I want to become a partner in the writing of the Tsunami Memorial Torah
Let us give life!
Almost one year ago thousands of lives were tragically cut short when the great waves of the Indian Ocean tsunami crashed on the beaches of Thailand. Infants, children, sons, daughters, parents, spouses, grandparents and friends - the waves did not discriminate and took them all.
Chabad of Thailand amongst its other efforts aided the more than eighteen Jewish casualties and their families, assisting in identification, bringing them to proper Jewish burial and comforting the bereaved.
We are all survivors, having been touched by this disaster in many ways.
Mourning the victims we take to heart the classic call to action as the Rabbis have taught: “better one good action than a thousand sighs”.
As we look to remember and rebuild we have chosen to commission a special Torah in memory of the victims.
In Judaism, the Torah is the essence of life and of living, a source of light and life. This Torah provides light and hope after the dark and tragic events that day, and is an everlasting tribute to the memory of the victims.
As the Lubavitcher Rebbe said, “A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness”.
Our Torah is perfectly intact as we received it 3,300 years ago, with the first presentation shown to Moses by G–d,“written in black fire over white fire.” Moses transcribed that Torah of fire while G–d dictated the words. This Torah was placed in the Holy Ark and one Torah scroll was given to each of the twelve tribes. Its every feature was prescribed by G–d.
The chain of Torah remains unbroken from where it was given to us at Sinai: the words we read in Synagogue today are those recorded by Moses.
It is this Mitzvah that brings G–d's great blessing and fulfillment of His promises of protection to our children, our families, and our homes.
Please join us in writing history, in dedicating this Torah to illuminate the darkness!
Upon completion in a special ceremony this Torah will be placed in the recently established Chabad Center on Phuket Island, giving guidance and direction to the many young who come to hear it.
